Soil Mixing

Creates a strong and impermeable mass

For seepage mitigation

North Reservoir Dam  |  Akron, OH

To bring the North Reservoir Dam, which was close to two decades old, up to safety code and increase the factor of safety, it was necessary to mitigate excessive seepage through the dam. We were contracted to install soil mixing columns and a soil mix cutoff wall to rehabilitate the dam.

For shaft construction

Norris Cut  |  Miami, FL

An outdated wastewater pipeline in line for a revamp was located just south of the Port of Miami and ran underneath Biscayne Bay Norris Cut, connecting the Virginia Key Central Wastewater Treatment Plant (CDWWTP) to the exclusive residential area of Fisher Island. The new pipeline system was upgraded to a larger 60-inch diameter tunnel and force main. Part of  our work as the Prime Contractor included  a 28 foot diameter x 87 foot deep soil mixing TBM retrieval shaft.

What is soil mixing?

Soil mixing breaks up the soil and mixes it with a cement/bentonite grout in place to create a strong and impermeable mass.

â€

How does it work?

Soil mixing is done with vertical drums (cutter soil mixing) or horizontal augers (deep soil mixing) that cut into the ground and mix in the cement/bentonite grout with the soil.  Both are designed to combine high penetration rates with excellent mixing capacity.

Why do you need soil mixing?

Soil mixing can be used to create walls, plugs, mass treatment and ground improvement.
